The Book is a Mimic
is a TTRPG game in the form of a bookmark, submitted for the TTRPG Bookmark Jam of 2025.
How to Play?
- Place the bookmark in your book—any side, any page.
- The first two times you encounter the Bookmark, you will assign names—one for the Mimic, and later one for you (if you started with the Mimic). Each letter equals one life point. For example, Datura = 6HP. Assigning the name counts as an action for that turn.
- Flip the bookmark over. The other side will be used on the next turn.
- Roll two dice, and add the result to your current page number; this determines how far back the Bookmark travels.
- At the next encounter, roll one die to perform an action, resolve it, then roll two dice again to send the Bookmark (flipped to the other side) further back into your book.
- Repeat.
Lexicon
- Flesh, Wood, Plastic, Steel, Iron... These are the materials your weapon is made of. If you do not have a weapon yet (for example, at the start of the game), consider yourself to be using your fists—this counts as “flesh.”
- Chaotic/ Lawful: Your character can gain points in either as the game progresses (you can fill a small square on the sword to track it). When they are equal, you may choose whichever action you prefer.
- Letters: Each letter in a name represents 1 Health Point. If you lose a letter, you lose a life point (you may strike it out in the heart bar if you want to keep track).
This means your name may go from “Orlando” to “Orlan” to “Or”… and after you steal a letter from the Mimic, your name may become quite bizarre indeed.
Enjoy the game! :)
